Canon provides Data Loss Prevention (DLP) for Printers

Canon implements Data Loss Prevention features into its printersCanon, a worlwide leader in the printer market, is now providing tools to enable users of their printers to enable Data Loss Prevention auditing on them.

Check out this recent NetworkWorld article for more details on what Canon is doing to provide DLP for its printers.

Canon was motivated to implement DLP into its lineup of printer products when it learned that one of its largest customers had a printer related security breach. Someone had used one of their multifunction printers to copy critical business plans and the walked out the door with the copies.

To do date, there is little to no capacity for implementing security on printers with most DLP products. In part this is due to the lack of necessary features to do so on printers. Canon's attention to this detail is a big step in the right direction.

Along with printers, another common question that arises in DLP discussions is how to prevent people taking screenshot pictures with cameras or phones as well as other pictures of critical data and documents.

In order to best address printers, screenshots, and other such concerns, well developed physical security policies and procedures should be implemented by firms to cover and protect against such breaches. Putting time and effort into such policies and practices is a critical step for data loss prevention in any organization.
